how to make hard choices

“Hard choices are precious opportunities for us to celebrate what is special about the human condition, that the reasons that govern our choices as correct or incorrect sometimes run out, and it is here, in the space of hard choices, that we have the power to create reasons for ourselves to become the distinctive people that we are.”

Reflection

Of all the videos, this one has resonated with me most. Making a hard choice was exactly what I had to do last year as I decided where to go to college. To this day, I battle with whether that was the right decision. Hearing about Ruth Chang’s struggle between picking to be a lawyer and a philosopher was something that I could identify strongly with. Even though making the riskier decision was right for Chang, I don’t believe that mine was necessarily the best for me. I don’t regret my choice but I also think that sometimes, it’s limiting to define choices as “safe” or “risky.” It’s the same way that we tend to weigh the possibilities of either decision, but as Chang says, we can’t quantify life.
